You

Three kinds of work

- Shop and deliver — you do the shopping yourself, then deliver. Base pay is $11 to $20+, but a long grocery list can take 45 minutes in the aisles before you have driven a mile. Judge these on pay per hour, not pay per order.
- Returns — you collect items from customers and bring them back to the store, usually attached to a delivery run.
Your rating
Maintain at least 4.7 stars. Rating drives your access to good offers, and access drives your earnings, so it is worth protecting from day one. The two things that move it most: communicating clearly when an item is out of stock and you need to substitute, and carrying heavy orders to the door rather than leaving them at the end of the driveway.
Acceptance rate also matters, even though Spark publishes no hard cutoff. Repeatedly declining Round Robin offers — especially valuable ones — results in being deprioritised in your zone.

You are self-employed now
Spark drivers are independent contractors, not employees. Nothing is withheld, there is no mileage reimbursement, and you will receive a 1099 rather than a W-2. Three things to set up in your first week, before they become a problem:
- A mileage tracker that runs automatically. The IRS 2026 standard rate is 72.5¢ per business mile, and it covers every mile you drive for work — to the store, between drops, repositioning — not just the delivery leg.
